1. Can you tell us about your career journey and what led you to your current role at Essential Pharma?

I graduated in 2020 from Imperial College London with a degree in Aeronautical Engineering. While I enjoyed studying the theory and fundamentals of aerodynamics and structural analysis – skills that could lead to designing F1 cars or airplanes – I realized I wanted to apply my engineering skills in a more meaningful way. Growing up, a number of my friends and family were involved in the medical field and I saw how vital it was. I knew I wanted to be involved in that, either directly or indirectly.

I began my career at a small pharmaceutical company as a trainee in 2021. It was there that I gained hands-on experience, particularly in the supply chain – learning how medicines are sourced and distributed. This experience gave me a solid foundation. Since joining Essential Pharma in 2022, I have been able to deepen my involvement in the commercial side of delivering medicines.

While my previous company focused on the UK market and primarily interacted with pharmacies, Essential Pharma is a different ball game, distributing registered medicines across approximately 70 countries.

2. What do you enjoy most about your role, and how does it fit into the work of different teams within the business?

What I enjoy most about my role is the dynamic nature of the work – no two days are ever the same. Since commercial operations are at the heart of Essential Pharma, I get to collaborate with a variety of teams, from supply chain and regulatory to quality and finance.

At this earlier stage in my career, it is incredibly motivating to work so closely with a range of individuals with such deep expertise, who are all aligned to the same goal. Each interaction strengthens my understanding of how each department works with data and where there are overlaps.

In the background, I’m constantly refining the Power BI dashboard, which has become a key data visualisation tool for various departments. It helps streamline data flow and meets the specific needs of each team. It’s incredibly rewarding to be part of this process and reinforces just how crucial data is to the company’s success.

3. What do you find exciting and/or challenging about translating data analysis into actionable insights?

I find it exciting to work with raw data, turning it into actionable insights that guide business decisions. In particular, I enjoy looking at all the angles of data transformation. When I see the results it produces – especially when they’re replicable and scalable – it’s very rewarding.

There is also an important element of problem solving, particularly in relation to the variety of data we analyse – which comes in different formats and from different sources and countries. We work to overcome challenges here by leveraging the expertise across the team and our network, making the most of the available information to support and drive commercial strategies.

In data analysis, there is not only one way to get to the final destination, and we work hard as a team to deliver real insights.

4. What does it mean to your day-to-day role that ‘every patient matters’?

This value is at the core of everything we do. Ensuring the continuous supply of medicines, especially for underserved therapeutic areas like rare diseases, is paramount. I work closely with the supply chain to forecast accurately, manage stock levels, and prevent shortages. Even a brief disruption in supply can have significant consequences for patients who rely on consistent access to quality medications. This responsibility brings a sense of urgency, accountability, and purpose to my work every day, ensuring that I consistently deliver reliable, high-quality results.

Whilst my day-to-day role involves working with data, I find it incredibly rewarding knowing that the numbers and my work ultimately support patient care.

5. What advice would you give to someone looking to start a career in the pharmaceutical industry?

The pharmaceutical industry is fast-paced and constantly evolving. There’s always something new – whether it’s breakthroughs in medicine or emerging competition.

My advice would be to embrace the learning curve, be adaptable, seek out diverse experiences, and always keep the end goal – patient care – in mind. It’s a field that not only challenges you but also provides the satisfaction of knowing you’re making a real difference.
